ALMONTE TO OTTAWA COMMUTE

Almonte to Ottawa: Commute Routes and Drive Times

The commute from Almonte to Ottawa is about 46 km to downtown, which usually takes 45 to 55 minutes outside rush hour, while Kanata North is about 20 minutes away via County Road 49 and March Road. Almonte has no OC Transpo service, so nearly every commuter drives at least part of the way.

For many buyers, the commute is the deciding factor. Almonte works well if you work in Kanata, work hybrid or remotely, or are retired. A five-day downtown commute is possible, but it’s a real commitment. This guide covers the main routes, how long they actually take and how to test the drive before you buy.

All drive times below are approximate. Traffic, construction and weather can change them considerably, and the only way to know your commute is to drive it at the hours you’d actually travel.

Country road past farm fields toward a small town

Main Routes From Almonte to Ottawa

Route 1: County Road 49 and March Road (to Kanata North)

The most direct route into Ottawa’s west end leaves Almonte heading east on County Road 49, which becomes March Road at the Ottawa boundary. March Road runs straight into the Kanata North business park and on to Highway 417.

  • Best for: jobs in Kanata North and Kanata, and anyone heading to the west end.
  • Typical time to Kanata North: about 20 minutes.
  • Typical time to Highway 417 at Kanata: about 25 to 30 minutes.

This is a rural two-lane road for much of its length, with farm traffic in season and limited passing opportunities. It can slow noticeably at the Kanata end during peak hours.

Route 2: Carleton Place and Highway 7

The alternative heads south toward Carleton Place, about 15 minutes away, to pick up Highway 7. Highway 7 runs east and joins Highway 417 near Stittsville and Kanata.

  • Best for: commuters heading downtown, to Nepean or to the south end, and anyone who prefers a divided highway in winter.
  • Typical time to downtown Ottawa: about 45 to 55 minutes outside rush hour.

Highway 7 is a provincial highway, so you can check live conditions on Ontario 511 before you leave.

Drive Times From Almonte to Common Destinations

These are typical off-peak estimates. Add 15 to 30 minutes or more for peak travel into central Ottawa.

  • Kanata North business park: about 20 minutes
  • Kanata Centrum and Highway 417: about 25 to 30 minutes
  • Stittsville: about 25 to 30 minutes
  • Carleton Place: about 15 minutes
  • Downtown Ottawa: about 45 to 55 minutes
  • Ottawa airport: about 45 to 60 minutes

If you work in Kanata North, Almonte is closer in practice than many parts of Ottawa’s south and east ends. That’s a big reason the town has become popular with tech workers.

Is There Public Transit From Almonte to Ottawa?

Not in any practical sense for daily commuting.

  • OC Transpo does not serve Almonte. Its network ends inside the City of Ottawa.
  • Commuter bus: Almonte’s long-running private commuter bus to Ottawa ended in 2016 when its owner retired, and no regular replacement serves the town at the time of writing. If a new service appears, it will usually be announced by the Town of Mississippi Mills.
  • Ride the LT: a pre-booked shuttle run by the Lanark Transportation Association serves errands within Mississippi Mills and to Carleton Place. Ride the LT is useful for residents without a car, but it isn’t designed for commuting.

Park and ride into Ottawa

A common hybrid approach is to drive to a park-and-ride lot in Kanata and take transit from there. OC Transpo lists its park-and-ride locations and service. This can make a downtown commute more manageable on days when parking downtown is expensive or traffic is heavy.

Commuting From Almonte in Winter

Winter is the honest caveat. County Road 49 is exposed in places, and blowing snow can reduce visibility on open stretches. Snow clearing on county roads is handled by Lanark County up to the Ottawa boundary, where the City of Ottawa takes over March Road.

Practical advice from local commuters:

  • Use winter tires. They make a noticeable difference on rural roads.
  • Check conditions before you leave. Ontario 511 covers provincial highways like Highway 7. Local radio and county updates help for county roads.
  • Build in buffer time on storm days, or work from home if your employer allows it.
  • Keep an emergency kit in the car. Ontario’s winter driving guidance lists what to carry.

Who Does the Almonte Commute Work For?

Based on the buyers we see moving from Ottawa’s west end, Almonte tends to work well for:

  • Kanata North and Kanata workers. A 20-minute drive is comparable to many in-city commutes.
  • Hybrid workers. Two or three trips a week into Ottawa is manageable for most people.
  • Remote workers and retirees. For them, the commute is a non-issue, and the local hospital and walkable downtown cover day-to-day needs.

It’s a harder fit for:

  • Five-day downtown commuters who don’t want to spend roughly 90 minutes or more in the car each day.
  • Two-commuter households heading in opposite directions, such as one to Kanata and one to Orléans.
  • Households without a second car, since there’s no transit fallback.

Family Logistics Beyond the Daily Commute

The commute to work is only part of the picture. Almonte families also plan around:

  • School buses. Rural students are bused by the Upper Canada District School Board and Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario. In-town families may be within walking distance.
  • Activities. Almonte has an arena, parks and local clubs, but many families also drive to Kanata or Carleton Place for specialized sports, lessons and shopping.
  • Healthcare. Almonte General Hospital is in town, which cuts down on trips into Ottawa for emergency care and many routine services. Specialist appointments may still mean a drive.
  • Airport and travel. Allow about an hour to the Ottawa airport, more in winter or at peak times.

Remote Work and Internet in Almonte

If you plan to work from home, internet quality matters as much as the drive. In-town homes generally have more options than rural properties, where service can vary road by road. Before you firm up an offer, check which providers serve the specific address and at what speeds. The Government of Canada’s high-speed internet availability information is a useful first check. Don’t assume the service at a neighbour’s house is available at yours.

How to Test the Commute Before You Buy

Before you commit to an Almonte home:

  1. Drive the route at your real commute times, both directions, on a weekday.
  2. Try it in bad weather if you’re buying in fall or winter.
  3. Test the alternative route in case your primary one is blocked.
  4. Factor in school runs and activities. Many Almonte families drive kids to sports and lessons in Kanata or Carleton Place.
  5. Run the cost. Add up fuel, vehicle wear and parking against the price difference compared with a home closer to work.

Weighing Commute Time Against House Price

The case for Almonte usually comes down to a trade: more house, land or character for the money, in exchange for more time in the car. That trade looks different for every household. A buyer who drives to Kanata North twice a week will feel very little cost. A household with two daily downtown commutes will feel much more, in fuel, vehicle wear, possibly a second car, and hours each week.

Before you decide, put real numbers to your own situation: how many trips a week, to where, and at what times. Then compare the extra commuting cost with the price difference between the Almonte home you like and a similar home closer to work. Jason can pull comparable sales on both sides so you’re comparing like with like.

How Almonte Compares to Other Commuter Towns

If the commute is your main concern, compare Almonte with communities inside Ottawa that offer a similar rural or small-town feel. Our guides to commuting from Carp and commuting from Dunrobin cover those areas, and commuting in Ottawa explains the city’s transit and road network. For a full side-by-side, see Almonte vs Carp vs Stittsville.

Back on the Almonte community guide, you’ll find more on schools, amenities and housing, and you can browse current Almonte homes for sale.

Planning a Move to Almonte

Census data from Statistics Canada shows Mississippi Mills grew by more than 1,500 people between 2016 and 2021. If you’re moving from Ottawa, the commute is only one part of the move. Timing the sale of your current home with your purchase in Almonte is usually the bigger challenge. Our guide to buy and sell coordination explains how to plan it.

If you work from home or mostly drive to Kanata, compare new homes in Almonte, heritage homes near the downtown and rural properties in Mississippi Mills. Each comes with a different commute and a different price, and Jason can show you how they compare.

Buyers weighing the drive often compare newer homes such as Weavers Way with older homes near the downtown. If you already own in Almonte and are thinking about a move, see what your Almonte home is worth. And for the reasons many people find the drive worthwhile, browse things to do in Almonte.

Working with Jason has been an absolute privilege from start to finish. Finding the right realtor can be daunting, but Jason exceeded every expectation. He is remarkably knowledgeable and was extremely punctual and responsive to every question or request we had, no matter the time or the day. What stood out most was his complete sincerity and zero-pressure approach. When we walked through houses, he was transparent, pointing out both the pros and potential red flags instead of trying to make a quick sale. His honest feedback gave us complete confidence in our decision. If you want a dedicated, honest, and highly skilled agent in your corner, look no further than Jason!

Jason helped me buy my first home. He was extremely responsive and available from our very first call, and assisted with booking multiple viewings across Ottawa. He was punctual to every viewing and honest with his feedback with the homes we saw, and when it came time to go from viewing to buying, he had an impressive array of contacts from brokers to inspectors to lawyers, all with excellent reviews and who were great to work with in their own right. As a first-time home buyer, his responsiveness and patience with many questions were extremely reassuring and really streamlined the process, and I signed an offer on my home within just 2 weeks of meeting him. I would strongly recommend Jason to anyone buying a home in Ottawa, especially to those who are strangers to the process like I was. Thank you again, Jason!

Working with Jason on the sale of my property was genuinely one of the smoothest professional experiences I've had. He was responsive at every step, patient with every question (and I had many), and he clearly knew the local market inside and out. My sale wasn't a simple one — there was a tenant, a rental water heater, a plumber to coordinate, and plenty of complications that made this a genuinely difficult case. Jason handled all of it with calm, practical advice and always got back to me quickly, often with a solution before I even finished asking about the problem. What stood out most was his honesty. He didn't push, he didn't overpromise, and every recommendation he made turned out to be exactly right. I felt like I had a professional in my corner from day one. If you're looking for a realtor who is knowledgeable, responsive, and genuinely trustworthy, I can't recommend Jason highly enough. Thank you, Jason — much appreciated!

Outstanding Experience with Jason Polonski! Last May, my wife and I sold our home in Stittsville with Jason Polonski, and we couldn't be happier with our decision. Jason made the entire process remarkably smooth and stress-free. From day one, Jason stood out for his exceptional communication. He was always prompt and available to answer our queries—often within minutes—no matter the time of day. Whenever we had questions regarding paperwork, listing strategies, or handling property details, he addressed every concern with a truly genuine, human touch. What impressed us most was how proactive and reassuring he was at every step. When we had to coordinate the buyout of our water heater rental, Jason handled the reimbursement seamlessly, reassuring us with, "We should have a smooth sale now. :)"—and it truly was! Even post-closing, when we needed to arrange delivery for mailbox keys or track down final funds from head office, Jason stayed on top of every detail, putting a rush on things and constantly keeping us updated. Jason is a dedicated, attentive, and highly professional realtor who genuinely cares about his clients. It has been an absolute pleasure working with him, and we highly recommend Jason Polonski to anyone looking to buy or sell a home in the Ottawa region.
