Commuting from Dunrobin is done almost entirely by car. Most residents drive south on Dunrobin Road to March Road, then through Kanata North to Highway 417. Off-peak, that puts Kanata North’s technology park roughly 15 to 20 minutes away and downtown Ottawa roughly 35 to 45 minutes away, depending on where in Dunrobin you start. Public transit is limited to a small number of peak-period OC Transpo trips, so Dunrobin works best for people who drive, work in Kanata, or work from home part of the week.
For many buyers, that trade-off is exactly the point. Dunrobin offers acreage, river views and quiet within a reasonable drive of Canada’s largest technology park. This guide explains the routes, realistic travel times, transit options and winter considerations, so you can judge whether the commute fits your life before you buy.
It was prepared by Jason Polonski, a Kanata-based REALTOR® with more than 15 years of experience helping buyers and sellers across Ottawa’s west end.
Dunrobin’s road network is simple, which makes commuting predictable.
The City of Ottawa is studying safety improvements at the Constance Bay Road and Dunrobin Road intersection. A 2020 City safety study ranked it first of 22 locations for relative safety risk because of its collision history, steep grade and sightlines. The environmental assessment launched in February 2026, so residents should watch for changes there over the coming years.
The times below are approximate off-peak drives from Dunrobin village. Rush hour, weather, construction and your exact starting point will change them, so treat these as a starting point and test the drive yourself.
| Destination | Approximate off-peak drive |
|---|---|
| Kanata North technology park (March Road) | 15–20 minutes |
| Kanata Centrum and Kanata’s retail areas | about 20 minutes |
| Carp village | about 15 minutes |
| Queensway Carleton Hospital | about 30 minutes |
| NDHQ Carling Campus | about 30 minutes |
| Downtown Ottawa | 35–45 minutes |
| Ottawa International Airport | about 50 minutes |
A useful rule of thumb: from Dunrobin, the drive to Kanata is short and the drive to downtown is long. Buyers whose work is in the west end tend to be very happy with the commute. Those driving downtown five days a week should test it at rush hour before committing.
For a large share of Dunrobin buyers, the commute that matters is to Kanata North. The Kanata North Business Association describes the area as Canada’s largest technology park, home to more than 800 companies. Many of those offices sit along March Road, which is the same road most Dunrobin residents use to leave the area.
That geography is a big part of Dunrobin’s appeal. A tech worker can live on acreage or near the river and still reach the office in about the time it takes some suburban residents to cross Kanata. Buyers relocating for a tech job can find more context in the Kanata tech hub relocation guide.
Downtown commuters face a longer drive, usually via March Road and the 417, and the Queensway’s rush-hour traffic is the variable that matters most. A drive that takes 35 minutes on a quiet evening can take considerably longer on a weekday morning.
Federal employees working at the Department of National Defence’s Carling Campus in Ottawa’s west end have a shorter and more predictable trip than downtown commuters, which is one reason Dunrobin and the rest of West Carleton appeal to military and defence families. For relocating Canadian Armed Forces members, the Ottawa military relocation guide covers the posting process in detail.
Public transit in rural Ottawa is limited, and Dunrobin is no exception. A car is a practical necessity for nearly every household, and many families need two.
OC Transpo operates route 303 as a Connexion route, a limited, peak-period service designed for commuters. It links Dunrobin and Carp with the Carlingwood area in Ottawa’s west end, and the full trip takes a little over an hour. Service is limited to a small number of trips, so check current schedules with OC Transpo before relying on it. For residents whose schedule fits, it can be a useful option on some days.
Many Dunrobin commuters drive part of the way and take transit the rest. OC Transpo’s rural Park & Ride network includes a lot in Carp, on Westbrook Road near Highway 417, which is served by Connexion routes toward downtown. Kanata’s transit stations are another option for commuters heading east.
The O-Train’s western extension is under construction and will eventually bring light rail farther west. Opening dates have shifted, so check OC Transpo for the current timeline rather than planning around a specific date.
Winter changes the commute in rural Ottawa. The City clears roads according to its winter maintenance standards, which prioritize major routes. Quieter rural roads are typically cleared after the arterials, so the first few kilometres of the drive can be the slowest after a big storm.
A few practical points:
Since the pandemic, many Dunrobin households commute two or three days a week instead of five. That change has made rural living far more practical, and it’s one of the reasons interest in areas like Dunrobin has grown.
If you plan to work from home, reliable internet matters as much as the drive. Service varies by address in rural Ottawa, so confirm what is available at a specific property before buying. The guide to internet and utilities in Dunrobin explains how.
The commute is part of the real cost of living in Dunrobin, and it’s easy to underestimate when you’re focused on the purchase price. Many rural households need two vehicles, drive more kilometres each year and spend more on fuel, maintenance and winter tires than they did in the suburbs. Time counts too: an extra 15 minutes each way adds up to more than 100 hours a year for a five-day commuter.
None of that makes Dunrobin a poor choice. It just belongs in the budget alongside the mortgage, taxes, heating and well and septic upkeep. The guide to the cost of living in Dunrobin and the monthly cost of owning a home in Ottawa help put the full picture together.
Buyers who love Dunrobin rarely regret the commute, but the ones who do usually skipped this step. Before you firm up an offer:
If you’re comparing Dunrobin with a nearby rural community, the guide to commuting from Carp offers a useful point of comparison. The Dunrobin neighbourhood guide covers the community as a whole.

Jason helped me buy my first home. He was extremely responsive and available from our very first call, and assisted with booking multiple viewings across Ottawa. He was punctual to every viewing and honest with his feedback with the homes we saw, and when it came time to go from viewing to buying, he had an impressive array of contacts from brokers to inspectors to lawyers, all with excellent reviews and who were great to work with in their own right. As a first-time home buyer, his responsiveness and patience with many questions were extremely reassuring and really streamlined the process, and I signed an offer on my home within just 2 weeks of meeting him. I would strongly recommend Jason to anyone buying a home in Ottawa, especially to those who are strangers to the process like I was. Thank you again, Jason!Posted on Google![]()

Working with Jason on the sale of my property was genuinely one of the smoothest professional experiences I've had. He was responsive at every step, patient with every question (and I had many), and he clearly knew the local market inside and out. My sale wasn't a simple one — there was a tenant, a rental water heater, a plumber to coordinate, and plenty of complications that made this a genuinely difficult case. Jason handled all of it with calm, practical advice and always got back to me quickly, often with a solution before I even finished asking about the problem. What stood out most was his honesty. He didn't push, he didn't overpromise, and every recommendation he made turned out to be exactly right. I felt like I had a professional in my corner from day one. If you're looking for a realtor who is knowledgeable, responsive, and genuinely trustworthy, I can't recommend Jason highly enough. Thank you, Jason — much appreciated!Posted on Google![]()

Outstanding Experience with Jason Polonski! Last May, my wife and I sold our home in Stittsville with Jason Polonski, and we couldn't be happier with our decision. Jason made the entire process remarkably smooth and stress-free. From day one, Jason stood out for his exceptional communication. He was always prompt and available to answer our queries—often within minutes—no matter the time of day. Whenever we had questions regarding paperwork, listing strategies, or handling property details, he addressed every concern with a truly genuine, human touch. What impressed us most was how proactive and reassuring he was at every step. When we had to coordinate the buyout of our water heater rental, Jason handled the reimbursement seamlessly, reassuring us with, "We should have a smooth sale now. :)"—and it truly was! Even post-closing, when we needed to arrange delivery for mailbox keys or track down final funds from head office, Jason stayed on top of every detail, putting a rush on things and constantly keeping us updated. Jason is a dedicated, attentive, and highly professional realtor who genuinely cares about his clients. It has been an absolute pleasure working with him, and we highly recommend Jason Polonski to anyone looking to buy or sell a home in the Ottawa region.Posted on Google![]()

Buying our first home was a huge milestone for us, and we genuinely couldn't have asked for a better person to guide us through it than Jason. From day one, he made the entire process feel so much less overwhelming. What could have been a stressful experience was instead exciting, enjoyable, and honestly a lot of fun. He has a great sense of humour and a way of keeping things light when needed, while still being incredibly thorough and professional. One of the things we appreciated most was how much he genuinely cared about finding us the right home. He wasn't just trying to help us buy a house, he wanted to make sure we were making a good decision. He took the time to point out things we never would have noticed ourselves, shared insights about the homes we viewed, and was always looking out for potential issues that could become headaches down the road. It was obvious that he wanted us to end up somewhere we'd be truly happy, not just somewhere that checked a box. He also listened. Every preference, every must-have, every little detail we mentioned along the way was remembered and taken into consideration. We never felt pressured, rushed, or like we were compromising on what mattered to us. On top of that, he was incredibly responsive and always on the ball. Whether it was answering a last-minute question, booking a showing, or helping us navigate the next step, he was always there when we needed him. We felt supported every step of the way, and that's not something we'll forget. If you're looking for a realtor who is knowledgeable, honest, hardworking, and genuinely invested in his clients, we can't recommend Jason enough. We are so grateful for everything he did to help us find our home.
Where you live within Dunrobin changes the commute. A home near March Road and a home deep in the countryside toward Constance Bay can differ by 10 minutes or more each way. That’s more than 80 hours a year for a daily commuter.
Jason starts every rural search by understanding how a household actually lives: where each person works, how often they commute, where the children go to school and what the weekends look like. From there, he narrows the search to the parts of Dunrobin that fit, instead of chasing every listing.
He is a full-time REALTOR® with Right at Home Realty and has helped hundreds of buyers and sellers across Ottawa’s west end over more than 15 years. He works as a move coordinator: when you’re buying in Dunrobin and selling in Kanata or Stittsville, he lines up both closings so you avoid a timing mistake first and optimize price second. His background in construction and the electrical trades helps him assess a rural home’s well, septic system and electrical service. His Bachelor of Commerce from Concordia University, with a double major in Marketing and Finance, keeps the financial side of the move disciplined.

Off-peak, the drive from Dunrobin village to downtown Ottawa takes roughly 35 to 45 minutes via March Road and Highway 417. Rush-hour traffic on the Queensway can add considerably to that.
Dunrobin is a short drive north of Kanata. Kanata North’s technology park on March Road is roughly 15 to 20 minutes away off-peak, and Kanata’s main shopping areas are about 20 minutes away.
OC Transpo runs route 303, a limited peak-period Connexion service linking Dunrobin and Carp with Carlingwood. Service is limited, so most residents drive or use a park and ride for part of the trip.
Most residents use Dunrobin Road to reach March Road, which leads south through Kanata North to Highway 417. Some residents in the western part of the area head south toward Carp instead.
It takes more planning. Rural roads are generally cleared after major routes, driveways can be long, and school buses are cancelled more often. Winter tires and a flexible morning routine make a big difference.
It’s one of the best rural options for Kanata North workers. March Road connects Dunrobin directly to the tech park, making it a shorter commute than many rural communities offer.
