Commuting from Nepean is easier than from most of Ottawa’s suburbs: established Nepean neighbourhoods are typically 10 to 20 minutes from downtown by car outside rush hour, 10 to 20 minutes from Kanata’s business parks, and close to Highway 417, Highway 416 and the new O-Train West Extension stations at Baseline, Iris, Queensview, Pinecrest, Bayshore and Moodie.
The right neighbourhood depends on where you work and how you want to get there. This guide covers typical drive times, transit, cycling routes and which parts of Nepean suit which commutes. Drive times are estimates; check current conditions for your route and time of day.
These are typical off-peak drive times from central Nepean (around Baseline and Woodroffe). Rush hour can add significantly, especially on Highway 417 and the main north-south roads.
| Destination | Typical off-peak drive |
|---|---|
| Downtown Ottawa / Parliament Hill | 15 to 20 minutes |
| Tunney’s Pasture | 10 to 15 minutes |
| DND Carling Campus | 10 minutes |
| Kanata North technology park | 20 to 25 minutes |
| Kanata South business parks | 15 to 20 minutes |
| Ottawa International Airport | 15 to 20 minutes |
| Barrhaven | 10 to 15 minutes |
| Algonquin College / Queensway Carleton Hospital | 5 minutes |
For road conditions and construction, check Ontario 511 and the City of Ottawa’s traffic updates.
The O-Train West Extension is the biggest change to Nepean commuting in decades.
The extension runs west from Tunney’s Pasture through Westboro, Dominion, Cleary and New Orchard to Lincoln Fields. From there, one branch continues west through Queensview, Pinecrest and Bayshore to Moodie, and the other runs south through Iris to Baseline Station at Algonquin College. The stations serving Nepean are:
The City has targeted completion of the West Extension around the end of 2026, with passenger service to follow after testing. Timelines have shifted several times, so check OC Transpo for the current opening date.
Homes within a comfortable walk of a station may appeal to more buyers and renters over time, and some areas around stations are seeing new high-rise development. If transit matters to you, check walking routes to the nearest station, not just straight-line distance.
Until rail service opens, Nepean relies on OC Transpo buses. Baseline Station is a major hub, and the Southwest Transitway connects Baseline south to Barrhaven. Frequent routes run along Baseline, Merivale, Woodroffe and Carling. OC Transpo restructured its bus network in recent years, so check OC Transpo for current routes and frequencies from any address.
VIA Rail‘s Fallowfield station, south of the Greenbelt near Barrhaven, is a short drive from most of Nepean and serves the Toronto corridor. It’s much quicker to reach from Nepean than the main station downtown.
The Ottawa International Airport is typically 15 to 20 minutes by car via Hunt Club Road. By transit, the O-Train airport link (Line 4) connects to the Trillium Line (Line 2) in the south end.
Most Nepean commuters reach Kanata by Highway 417, with the Moodie Drive, Eagleson Road and March Road exits serving the main business parks. Rush-hour slowdowns are most common near the Highway 416 interchange and on the approach to Kanata. From Bells Corners and Arlington Woods, Robertson Road and Hazeldean Road offer alternatives when the highway is backed up. Once the O-Train reaches Moodie, some Kanata commuters may combine rail with a bus or a short drive, but check current OC Transpo connections for your specific workplace before you count on transit.
Some Nepean arterials, such as Robertson Road and Moodie Drive, are busy and less comfortable for cyclists, and many older streets have no sidewalks. Choose your route carefully, and check the City of Ottawa’s cycling maps for protected lanes and multi-use paths.
Centrepointe, City View and parts of Leslie Park and Crystal Beach are the most walkable parts of Nepean for daily errands and transit.
Parkwood Hills and City View, Centrepointe and Qualicum offer the shortest trips, with O-Train access at Baseline, Pinecrest and Queensview.
Crystal Beach and Lakeview are next door, and Bells Corners and Qualicum are a few minutes away. Posted members should see our military relocation service.
Bells Corners, Crystal Beach and Arlington Woods offer quick access via Highways 417 and 416. See Nepean vs Kanata.
Tanglewood, Country Place and Pineglen and Craig Henry are close to Hunt Club Road.
Centrepointe, Leslie Park and Briargreen and Qualicum are within a few minutes.
If you work from home some days, weigh the quality of your home office space as much as the commute. A slightly longer trip two or three days a week may be worth it for an extra bedroom or a quieter street. On the other hand, if you go into the office every day, a short commute or walking access to an O-Train station can matter more than square footage.
Ottawa winters change the commute, and a few practical points are worth knowing before you choose a home.
If you drive an electric vehicle or plan to, check whether a home can support a Level 2 charger. Older Nepean homes with 60-amp or 100-amp service may need an electrical upgrade, which requires a licensed electrician and a permit. For condo buyers, ask the corporation about its EV charging policy and any installation costs. Hydro Ottawa has information on electricity rates and EV charging at home, including time-of-use options that can lower overnight charging costs.
Before you firm up an offer, drive or ride your commute at the time you’d actually travel. A route that takes 15 minutes on a Sunday can take 35 on a weekday morning.
If two people commute in different directions, look for neighbourhoods that balance both, such as central Nepean for a downtown and Kanata split.
Commuting costs include fuel, parking and vehicle wear, or transit passes. A slightly higher home price in a well-connected location can pay back over time. The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada has budgeting tools that can help you compare.
New stations, road projects and development around transit can change commutes and property values. The City of Ottawa and OC Transpo publish project updates.

Working with Jason on the sale of my property was genuinely one of the smoothest professional experiences I've had. He was responsive at every step, patient with every question (and I had many), and he clearly knew the local market inside and out. My sale wasn't a simple one — there was a tenant, a rental water heater, a plumber to coordinate, and plenty of complications that made this a genuinely difficult case. Jason handled all of it with calm, practical advice and always got back to me quickly, often with a solution before I even finished asking about the problem. What stood out most was his honesty. He didn't push, he didn't overpromise, and every recommendation he made turned out to be exactly right. I felt like I had a professional in my corner from day one. If you're looking for a realtor who is knowledgeable, responsive, and genuinely trustworthy, I can't recommend Jason highly enough. Thank you, Jason — much appreciated!Posted on Google![]()

Outstanding Experience with Jason Polonski! Last May, my wife and I sold our home in Stittsville with Jason Polonski, and we couldn't be happier with our decision. Jason made the entire process remarkably smooth and stress-free. From day one, Jason stood out for his exceptional communication. He was always prompt and available to answer our queries—often within minutes—no matter the time of day. Whenever we had questions regarding paperwork, listing strategies, or handling property details, he addressed every concern with a truly genuine, human touch. What impressed us most was how proactive and reassuring he was at every step. When we had to coordinate the buyout of our water heater rental, Jason handled the reimbursement seamlessly, reassuring us with, "We should have a smooth sale now. :)"—and it truly was! Even post-closing, when we needed to arrange delivery for mailbox keys or track down final funds from head office, Jason stayed on top of every detail, putting a rush on things and constantly keeping us updated. Jason is a dedicated, attentive, and highly professional realtor who genuinely cares about his clients. It has been an absolute pleasure working with him, and we highly recommend Jason Polonski to anyone looking to buy or sell a home in the Ottawa region.Posted on Google![]()

Jason was professional, efficient, knowledgeable, and incredibly pleasant to work with. His rates are very reasonable, and his dedication to his clients is outstanding. If you’re looking for fast, reliable, and friendly service, I would absolutely recommend contacting him.❤️Posted on Google![]()

Buying our first home was a huge milestone for us, and we genuinely couldn't have asked for a better person to guide us through it than Jason. From day one, he made the entire process feel so much less overwhelming. What could have been a stressful experience was instead exciting, enjoyable, and honestly a lot of fun. He has a great sense of humour and a way of keeping things light when needed, while still being incredibly thorough and professional. One of the things we appreciated most was how much he genuinely cared about finding us the right home. He wasn't just trying to help us buy a house, he wanted to make sure we were making a good decision. He took the time to point out things we never would have noticed ourselves, shared insights about the homes we viewed, and was always looking out for potential issues that could become headaches down the road. It was obvious that he wanted us to end up somewhere we'd be truly happy, not just somewhere that checked a box. He also listened. Every preference, every must-have, every little detail we mentioned along the way was remembered and taken into consideration. We never felt pressured, rushed, or like we were compromising on what mattered to us. On top of that, he was incredibly responsive and always on the ball. Whether it was answering a last-minute question, booking a showing, or helping us navigate the next step, he was always there when we needed him. We felt supported every step of the way, and that's not something we'll forget. If you're looking for a realtor who is knowledgeable, honest, hardworking, and genuinely invested in his clients, we can't recommend Jason enough. We are so grateful for everything he did to help us find our home.Posted on Google![]()
