Dunrobin schools are run by four publicly funded boards: the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board (English public), the Ottawa Catholic School Board (English Catholic), the CEPEO (French public) and the CECCE (French Catholic). The community’s public high school is West Carleton Secondary School, on Dunrobin Road. Elementary students generally travel by school bus to schools elsewhere in West Carleton or Kanata, and the exact school depends on the home’s address.
That last point matters more in Dunrobin than in most of Ottawa. Rural catchments cover large areas, two homes a few kilometres apart can be assigned to different schools, and boundaries are reviewed from time to time. This guide explains how the system works, which schools Dunrobin families commonly attend, and how to confirm the right school before you firm up an offer.
It was prepared by Jason Polonski, a Kanata-based REALTOR® with more than 15 years of experience helping families buy and sell across Ottawa’s west end, including Dunrobin, Carp, Constance Bay and Kanata North.
Every Ottawa school board assigns students to a “designated” school based on their home address. In Dunrobin, that address-based system decides three things for your family: which elementary school your children attend, which high school they move on to, and whether they qualify for board-provided transportation.
The Ottawa-Carleton District School Board publishes a school locator where you can enter a street address and see the designated schools for each program. The other three boards have their own tools and boundaries, which do not match the public board’s. A home can fall into one school for English public, a different school for Catholic, and another again for French-language education.
For buyers, the practical rule is simple. Treat the school information in a listing as a starting point, not a guarantee, and check the specific civic address with the board yourself. Rural boundaries can also change during a board’s boundary or accommodation reviews, so a school a neighbour attended ten years ago is not necessarily the one your children will attend.
West Carleton Secondary School is the OCDSB high school located at 3088 Dunrobin Road, in the heart of the Dunrobin area. It serves a large rural catchment that stretches across much of West Carleton, which is why it draws students from Dunrobin, Constance Bay, Woodlawn, Carp and the surrounding countryside.
Its elementary feeder schools include Huntley Centennial Public School in Carp, Stonecrest Elementary School in Woodlawn and Jack Donohue Public School in Kanata. Students who finish Grade 8 at those schools typically continue to West Carleton Secondary, although families can apply to specialized programs elsewhere in the city.
For many Dunrobin families, the location is a genuine advantage. Some homes in the area are a short drive from the high school, which makes early practices, evening events and the occasional missed bus far easier to manage than a long cross-city commute.
West Carleton Secondary offers a Specialist High Skills Major, an Ontario program that lets students focus part of their high school timetable on a career sector and graduate with an SHSM seal on their Ontario Secondary School Diploma, along with sector-recognized certifications. That can be a strong fit for students leaning toward the trades, technology or other applied careers.
Program offerings change from year to year, so check the school’s website or course calendar for the current list of majors, co-op placements, French courses and extracurriculars. If a specific program is a deciding factor, confirm it with the school directly before you buy.
There is no single “Dunrobin elementary school” that every family attends. Depending on the address, OCDSB students in and around Dunrobin are commonly designated to one of the elementary schools in West Carleton or Kanata, including these feeder schools of West Carleton Secondary:
Because designations are address-specific, always run the exact civic address through the locator rather than relying on the general area.
Many Dunrobin families want French for their children, and the OCDSB offers Early French Immersion at selected schools. Huntley Centennial, for example, offers Early French Immersion from Senior Kindergarten to Grade 8 alongside its English program.
Immersion is often housed at a different school from the English program for the same address, and entry points and program availability can change. If immersion matters to you, check the designated immersion school for the address separately from the English school.
The Ottawa Catholic School Board draws its own boundaries, so Catholic school assignments in Dunrobin do not follow the public board’s map.
One of the rural Catholic elementary schools in West Carleton is St. Michael Catholic School in Corkery, at 1572 Corkery Road near Carp. It runs from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 6 and offers an extended day program for before- and after-school care. Students then move on to All Saints Catholic High School at 5115 Kanata Avenue in Kanata North, which serves Grades 7 to 12 and offers several Specialist High Skills Major programs.
As with the public board, confirm the designated Catholic school for your address directly with the OCSB, since rural boundaries can place nearby homes in different catchments.
Two French-language boards serve Ottawa, and both are open to eligible families living in Dunrobin.
Admission to French-language schools is based on eligibility rather than simple address. Ontario explains who qualifies on its French-language education page, and families who don’t automatically qualify can apply through a board’s admission process. Contact the board early, because the designated French school and its transportation can look quite different from the English options for the same home.
Most Dunrobin students ride a school bus, and that shapes daily life more than many buyers from the suburbs expect. For the OCDSB and OCSB, transportation is organized by the Ottawa Student Transportation Authority, which publishes routes, eligibility rules and daily cancellations. The two French boards use their own transportation consortium.
A few rural realities are worth planning for:
Ontario school boards are required to offer before- and after-school programs for kindergarten to Grade 6 students where there is enough demand, and several West Carleton schools host extended day programs on site. Rural childcare spaces can fill quickly, though, and waitlists are common.
If you work in Kanata or downtown, sort out childcare before moving day, not after. It is one of the most common gaps for families relocating from a suburb with a daycare on every corner.
A short checklist saves families from the most common mistakes:
For families, the timing of a move often matters as much as the house. Closing in late summer lets children start the year at their new school, while a mid-year move can mean a change of school in the middle of a term.
Jason plans purchases around those dates. When a family is buying in Dunrobin and selling in Kanata or Stittsville, he coordinates both closings so the move lines up with the school calendar and the family doesn’t carry two homes. His approach is simple: avoid a timing mistake first, then optimize the price.
He also builds school verification into the offer timeline. Catchment checks and bus confirmations get done during the conditional period, alongside the rural checks every Dunrobin purchase needs, including well water, septic and the other steps in buying a rural property in Ottawa.
Families comparing the area with other rural communities can also read the Carp schools guide. Anyone still exploring the area as a whole should start with the Dunrobin neighbourhood guide.

Jason helped me buy my first home. He was extremely responsive and available from our very first call, and assisted with booking multiple viewings across Ottawa. He was punctual to every viewing and honest with his feedback with the homes we saw, and when it came time to go from viewing to buying, he had an impressive array of contacts from brokers to inspectors to lawyers, all with excellent reviews and who were great to work with in their own right. As a first-time home buyer, his responsiveness and patience with many questions were extremely reassuring and really streamlined the process, and I signed an offer on my home within just 2 weeks of meeting him. I would strongly recommend Jason to anyone buying a home in Ottawa, especially to those who are strangers to the process like I was. Thank you again, Jason!Posted on Google![]()

Working with Jason on the sale of my property was genuinely one of the smoothest professional experiences I've had. He was responsive at every step, patient with every question (and I had many), and he clearly knew the local market inside and out. My sale wasn't a simple one — there was a tenant, a rental water heater, a plumber to coordinate, and plenty of complications that made this a genuinely difficult case. Jason handled all of it with calm, practical advice and always got back to me quickly, often with a solution before I even finished asking about the problem. What stood out most was his honesty. He didn't push, he didn't overpromise, and every recommendation he made turned out to be exactly right. I felt like I had a professional in my corner from day one. If you're looking for a realtor who is knowledgeable, responsive, and genuinely trustworthy, I can't recommend Jason highly enough. Thank you, Jason — much appreciated!Posted on Google![]()

Outstanding Experience with Jason Polonski! Last May, my wife and I sold our home in Stittsville with Jason Polonski, and we couldn't be happier with our decision. Jason made the entire process remarkably smooth and stress-free. From day one, Jason stood out for his exceptional communication. He was always prompt and available to answer our queries—often within minutes—no matter the time of day. Whenever we had questions regarding paperwork, listing strategies, or handling property details, he addressed every concern with a truly genuine, human touch. What impressed us most was how proactive and reassuring he was at every step. When we had to coordinate the buyout of our water heater rental, Jason handled the reimbursement seamlessly, reassuring us with, "We should have a smooth sale now. :)"—and it truly was! Even post-closing, when we needed to arrange delivery for mailbox keys or track down final funds from head office, Jason stayed on top of every detail, putting a rush on things and constantly keeping us updated. Jason is a dedicated, attentive, and highly professional realtor who genuinely cares about his clients. It has been an absolute pleasure working with him, and we highly recommend Jason Polonski to anyone looking to buy or sell a home in the Ottawa region.Posted on Google![]()

Buying our first home was a huge milestone for us, and we genuinely couldn't have asked for a better person to guide us through it than Jason. From day one, he made the entire process feel so much less overwhelming. What could have been a stressful experience was instead exciting, enjoyable, and honestly a lot of fun. He has a great sense of humour and a way of keeping things light when needed, while still being incredibly thorough and professional. One of the things we appreciated most was how much he genuinely cared about finding us the right home. He wasn't just trying to help us buy a house, he wanted to make sure we were making a good decision. He took the time to point out things we never would have noticed ourselves, shared insights about the homes we viewed, and was always looking out for potential issues that could become headaches down the road. It was obvious that he wanted us to end up somewhere we'd be truly happy, not just somewhere that checked a box. He also listened. Every preference, every must-have, every little detail we mentioned along the way was remembered and taken into consideration. We never felt pressured, rushed, or like we were compromising on what mattered to us. On top of that, he was incredibly responsive and always on the ball. Whether it was answering a last-minute question, booking a showing, or helping us navigate the next step, he was always there when we needed him. We felt supported every step of the way, and that's not something we'll forget. If you're looking for a realtor who is knowledgeable, honest, hardworking, and genuinely invested in his clients, we can't recommend Jason enough. We are so grateful for everything he did to help us find our home.
