The best things to do in Britannia, Ottawa all revolve around the water. This west-end community sits where the Ottawa River widens into Lac Deschênes, and within a few minutes’ walk you’ll find one of the city’s public beaches, a provincially significant wetland, sailing clubs and a riverside pathway that runs all the way downtown.
This guide covers what to do in Britannia through the year, practical tips on parking, pets and timing, and what day-to-day life looks like for people who live here. If you’re thinking about moving to the area, Jason’s Britannia neighbourhood guide covers homes, schools and flood history in detail.
Britannia Beach is one of the City of Ottawa’s supervised public beaches. It sits within Britannia Park at 2805 Carling Avenue, with a long sandy shoreline facing west across Lac Deschênes, which makes it one of the best sunset spots in the city.
Season dates, supervision hours and rentals change from year to year, so check the City of Ottawa beaches page before you go.
Ottawa Public Health tests the water at the city’s public beaches for E. coli during the season. In 2025, testing moved from daily to weekly. When results are poor, a no-swimming advisory is posted, so check the Ottawa Public Health beach results before you swim, especially after heavy rain.
Right beside Britannia Village, Mud Lake is a wetland and forest managed by the National Capital Commission. It’s recognized by Ontario as a provincially significant wetland, and it sits within the Lac Deschênes–Ottawa River Important Bird Area.
Mud Lake is one of the most popular urban birding sites in Canada. The Ottawa Field-Naturalists’ Club describes the Britannia area as the best year-round birding hotspot in Ottawa. Spring and fall migration are the busiest times: warblers, thrushes and flycatchers move through the woods, herons work the shallows and ducks gather on the pond. The ridge near the water purification plant is a favourite early-morning spot.
Trails loop through mature forest, wetland and shoreline. Because the area is fragile, the NCC doesn’t allow dogs, other pets or cycling on the Mud Lake trails, and visitors are asked to stay on marked paths and not feed wildlife. Parking and trail entrances are on Cassels Street.
Lac Deschênes is wide, open water, which is why the Britannia area has long been a centre of sailing in Ottawa. The Britannia Yacht Club sits on the point beside the village, and the Nepean Sailing Club is a short distance west at Andrew Haydon Park. Summer evenings often bring dozens of sails onto the water.
You don’t need a membership to get on the water. Stand-up paddleboards can be rented at the beach in season, and kayakers and canoeists launch from the shoreline parks. Conditions on the river can change quickly with wind and water levels, so check the forecast and the Ottawa River Regulation Planning Board updates before heading out, and always wear a life jacket.
The NCC’s Capital Pathway runs along the river through Britannia. Head east and you pass Westboro Beach on the way to LeBreton Flats and downtown. Head west and you reach Andrew Haydon Park, with its ponds, picnic areas and sailing club. It’s one of the best cycling routes in the city and a popular commute for people who live in the west end.
| Season | What to do |
|---|---|
| Spring | Bird migration at Mud Lake, early pathway rides, watching the river run high after the thaw |
| Summer | Supervised swimming, paddleboarding, sailing, picnics and sunsets over Lac Deschênes |
| Fall | Peak fall migration at Mud Lake, colourful forest trails, quieter beach walks |
| Winter | Snowy walks on the Mud Lake trails, birding for winter species, views of the frozen river |
One safety note: the river and Mud Lake don’t freeze evenly. Stay off ice-covered waterways.
Britannia is an easy family outing. The beach has shallow water near the shore, play structures and picnic space, and the Mud Lake trails are short and flat enough for young walkers. Bring a bird guide or a phone app and turn the walk into a spotting game. Families with older kids can ride the pathway west to Andrew Haydon Park or east toward Westboro Beach. Sailing and paddling clubs in the area run summer programs for young people; check each club’s website for registration dates.
Britannia Village is one of the oldest settlements in what is now Ottawa, dating to the early 1800s, before Bytown was founded. Around 1900 the Ottawa Electric Railway extended its streetcar line to Britannia, and the area became a busy summer escape for city residents, with a pier, pavilions and amusements. Many cottages built in that era were later winterized and still stand in the village today.
The river has also shaped recent history. Parts of Britannia Village flooded in 2017 and 2019, and a 1.6-kilometre berm built by the City and the Rideau Valley Conservation Authority now protects about 120 homes. You can see it as you walk the edge of the village.
Britannia Village itself is mostly residential, and the beach canteen is open in season. For more choice, the restaurants and shops along Richmond Road and Carling Avenue are minutes away, and Bayshore Shopping Centre is a short drive west.
Britannia is at the western edge of Ottawa’s inner suburbs, between Bayshore and Westboro. By car, take Carling Avenue or Richmond Road. By bike, the Capital Pathway along the river is the most pleasant route from almost anywhere in the west end or downtown. Buses run along Carling Avenue and Richmond Road, and new O-Train stations on the west extension will bring rail service close to the area.
For many people, a summer evening at Britannia Beach is what starts the search. Living here means the beach, Mud Lake and the pathway are part of everyday life, not a weekend outing. The trade-offs are real, though: some low-lying streets carry flood risk, and the housing ranges from converted cottages to apartment towers.

Jason helped me buy my first home. He was extremely responsive and available from our very first call, and assisted with booking multiple viewings across Ottawa. He was punctual to every viewing and honest with his feedback with the homes we saw, and when it came time to go from viewing to buying, he had an impressive array of contacts from brokers to inspectors to lawyers, all with excellent reviews and who were great to work with in their own right. As a first-time home buyer, his responsiveness and patience with many questions were extremely reassuring and really streamlined the process, and I signed an offer on my home within just 2 weeks of meeting him. I would strongly recommend Jason to anyone buying a home in Ottawa, especially to those who are strangers to the process like I was. Thank you again, Jason!Posted on Google![]()

Working with Jason on the sale of my property was genuinely one of the smoothest professional experiences I've had. He was responsive at every step, patient with every question (and I had many), and he clearly knew the local market inside and out. My sale wasn't a simple one — there was a tenant, a rental water heater, a plumber to coordinate, and plenty of complications that made this a genuinely difficult case. Jason handled all of it with calm, practical advice and always got back to me quickly, often with a solution before I even finished asking about the problem. What stood out most was his honesty. He didn't push, he didn't overpromise, and every recommendation he made turned out to be exactly right. I felt like I had a professional in my corner from day one. If you're looking for a realtor who is knowledgeable, responsive, and genuinely trustworthy, I can't recommend Jason highly enough. Thank you, Jason — much appreciated!Posted on Google![]()

Outstanding Experience with Jason Polonski! Last May, my wife and I sold our home in Stittsville with Jason Polonski, and we couldn't be happier with our decision. Jason made the entire process remarkably smooth and stress-free. From day one, Jason stood out for his exceptional communication. He was always prompt and available to answer our queries—often within minutes—no matter the time of day. Whenever we had questions regarding paperwork, listing strategies, or handling property details, he addressed every concern with a truly genuine, human touch. What impressed us most was how proactive and reassuring he was at every step. When we had to coordinate the buyout of our water heater rental, Jason handled the reimbursement seamlessly, reassuring us with, "We should have a smooth sale now. :)"—and it truly was! Even post-closing, when we needed to arrange delivery for mailbox keys or track down final funds from head office, Jason stayed on top of every detail, putting a rush on things and constantly keeping us updated. Jason is a dedicated, attentive, and highly professional realtor who genuinely cares about his clients. It has been an absolute pleasure working with him, and we highly recommend Jason Polonski to anyone looking to buy or sell a home in the Ottawa region.Posted on Google![]()

Buying our first home was a huge milestone for us, and we genuinely couldn't have asked for a better person to guide us through it than Jason. From day one, he made the entire process feel so much less overwhelming. What could have been a stressful experience was instead exciting, enjoyable, and honestly a lot of fun. He has a great sense of humour and a way of keeping things light when needed, while still being incredibly thorough and professional. One of the things we appreciated most was how much he genuinely cared about finding us the right home. He wasn't just trying to help us buy a house, he wanted to make sure we were making a good decision. He took the time to point out things we never would have noticed ourselves, shared insights about the homes we viewed, and was always looking out for potential issues that could become headaches down the road. It was obvious that he wanted us to end up somewhere we'd be truly happy, not just somewhere that checked a box. He also listened. Every preference, every must-have, every little detail we mentioned along the way was remembered and taken into consideration. We never felt pressured, rushed, or like we were compromising on what mattered to us. On top of that, he was incredibly responsive and always on the ball. Whether it was answering a last-minute question, booking a showing, or helping us navigate the next step, he was always there when we needed him. We felt supported every step of the way, and that's not something we'll forget. If you're looking for a realtor who is knowledgeable, honest, hardworking, and genuinely invested in his clients, we can't recommend Jason enough. We are so grateful for everything he did to help us find our home.
