Things to Do in Manotick: A Local's Guide

By Jason Polonski, REALTOR® with Right at Home Realty · Last updated: October 2026

The best things to do in Manotick centre on its history and the river: tour Watson’s Mill, a working grist mill founded in 1860; walk Main Street’s shops and restaurants; visit the Saturday farmers’ market across from the mill; watch boats pass through the Long Island Locks; and join Dickinson Days on the first weekend of June. In winter, the trails and the arena keep the village busy.

This guide is for visitors, new residents and anyone deciding whether Manotick’s village life is for them. It covers the village’s history, events through the year, shopping and dining, the outdoors and family activities.

For buying a home here, see the Manotick village guide. For the outdoors in depth, see Manotick parks, trails and the Rideau River.

Watson’s Mill and Manotick’s History

Watson’s Mill is the village’s landmark. Founded in 1860 by Moss Kent Dickinson and Joseph Merrill Currier as the Long Island Flouring Mills, it took the Watson name after Harry Watson bought it in 1946. The Rideau Valley Conservation Authority bought it in 1972 and turned it into a museum.

The mill is open in summer, with milling demonstrations on Sundays, and it hosts heritage programming through the season. It also has a ghost story: the death of Ann Currier at the mill in 1861 is part of local legend.

Across the square is Dickinson House, built in 1863. Together they give the core its character. Our guide to heritage and century homes in Manotick covers the village’s historic houses.

Events Through the Year

  • Dickinson Days (June). The village’s signature festival, held on the first Friday and Saturday of June around Dickinson Square, with Pioneer Days at the mill run by staff and volunteers.
  • Doors Open Ottawa. Often coincides with Dickinson Days, opening historic buildings to visitors.
  • Manotick Farmers’ Market (summer to fall). Saturday mornings from June into mid-October, in the Carriage Shed parking lot at 5524 Dickinson Street, across from the mill. Check current dates before you go.
  • Seasonal and holiday events. The Manotick Village and Community Association and local businesses run events through the year, including winter festivities.

For current dates, check the community association and the mill’s website before you plan a visit.

Sell Your Ottawa Home for Just 1% Listing Commission

Why pay 2.5% listing commission to sell your home when you don't have to? Jason Polonski lists Ottawa homes for a simple 1% listing commission. Full MLS® and REALTOR.ca exposure, professional photography, powerful online marketing, expert pricing, and a skilled negotiator fighting for every dollar of your sale price. Top-tier service — you just keep thousands more when your home sells. Smart sellers are already making the switch. Your home deserves the best, and your wallet deserves a break.

Main Street Shopping and Dining

Manotick Main Street and the streets around the mill are lined with independent shops, cafés, restaurants and services, which is a big part of what sets the village apart from a suburb. It’s an easy place to spend an afternoon: browse the shops, have lunch, walk to the river and finish at the mill.

For residents, the core covers most daily needs, with larger stores a short drive north in Barrhaven. If being able to walk to dinner or coffee matters to you, look at homes in the village core first.

Get Cash Back When You Buy a Home in Ottawa

Can you get cash back when buying a home in Ottawa? Yes. Jason Polonski, a Chairman's Club REALTOR® serving Ottawa and Kanata, shares part of his commission with buyers — up to $3,000 cash back at closing.* You still get full-service, award-winning representation: expert pricing, sharp negotiation, and hands-on guidance from first showing to keys in hand. No cut corners and no rebate-only shortcuts — just real money back in your pocket when you buy your Ottawa or Kanata home.

On and Along the River

  • Watch the locks. The Long Island Locks, a flight of three locks beside a stone arch dam, are a favourite summer stop, with picnic tables and day-use docking.
  • Paddle or boat. The Rideau Canal is open to boaters and paddlers through the navigation season.
  • Walk the boardwalk. Chapman Mills Conservation Area, a short drive north, has a 1.5-kilometre boardwalk along the river.
  • Ride the pathway. The Osgoode Link Pathway offers 21 kilometres of stone-dust trail for cycling, walking and, in winter, skiing.

For Families and Rainy Days

Families have plenty of options. The Manotick library branch runs programs for children, the arena and community centre host skating and sports, and the parks in the village and Mahogany have play structures and open space. See the City’s recreation programs.

Watson’s Mill is a good outing for curious kids, especially on demonstration days, and the farmers’ market makes an easy Saturday morning. When the weather turns, Barrhaven’s larger recreation centres and shops are close by.

A Perfect Day in Manotick

  1. Morning. Coffee in the village, then the farmers’ market across from Watson’s Mill if it’s a summer Saturday.
  2. Late morning. Tour Watson’s Mill and Dickinson Square, and walk across to Long Island.
  3. Lunch. One of the village’s restaurants or a picnic by the river.
  4. Afternoon. Watch boats at the Long Island Locks, paddle the Rideau or cycle part of the Osgoode Link Pathway.
  5. Evening. Dinner on Main Street, or a walk at Chapman Mills Conservation Area on the way home.

Manotick Through the Seasons

  • Spring. The river rises with the spring runoff, birds return to the wetlands and the boating season starts on the Rideau Canal.
  • Summer. Dickinson Days in early June, the farmers’ market, boating, paddling and evenings on Main Street.
  • Fall. Colour along the river, the last market Saturdays and harvest season in the surrounding countryside.
  • Winter. Skating at the arena, skiing on the pathway and seasonal events in the village.

Getting There

Manotick is about 25 kilometres south of downtown Ottawa. Most visitors drive, via Barrhaven or along the river corridor. Transit options are limited; check the OC Transpo travel planner, and check Ontario 511 for road conditions in winter. Parking is available around the village core, and it can be busy during Dickinson Days.

Living Here vs Visiting

Visitors see Manotick at its best: a summer Saturday with the market, the mill and the river. Residents get that too, plus the quieter side of village life.

  • Community. Residents know local shop owners and neighbours, and volunteer for events like Dickinson Days.
  • Seasons. The village is lively in summer and quieter in winter, when the arena, library and local restaurants become the social centre.
  • Convenience. Daily needs are in the village, but bigger errands mean a drive to Barrhaven.
  • Getting around. Most residents drive to work. Our commuting guide explains the options.

If you’re thinking of moving, visit at different times: a weekday evening, a winter weekend and a summer Saturday. Walk the streets you’re considering and stop into local businesses. You’ll get a real sense of whether Manotick fits your life.

For more on the community and its events, the Manotick Village and Community Association and the library branch are good places to start.

Food, Drink and Shopping

The village core is where most visitors spend their time. Independent restaurants, cafés and pubs line Main Street and the streets around the mill, and many have patios in summer. Local shops sell clothing, gifts, home décor, books and specialty foods, and the Saturday farmers’ market adds local produce, baked goods and crafts from June into fall.

For residents, the village covers most daily needs, including groceries, a pharmacy, banking and personal services. Larger shopping trips usually mean a short drive north to Barrhaven.

Heritage and Learning

History is easy to find in Manotick. Watson’s Mill offers tours and demonstrations in season, Dickinson House sits across the square, and the Rideau Canal itself is a National Historic Site and UNESCO World Heritage Site. The library branch runs programs for all ages, and the community association and local volunteers keep village traditions going through the year.

For families, these are easy outings that double as lessons in local history: how the mill worked, why the village grew where it did and how the canal shaped the region.

Planning Your Visit

  • Visit on a Saturday morning in summer for the market and the busiest village atmosphere.
  • Time your visit for the first weekend of June to catch Dickinson Days.
  • Check the mill’s hours before you go, since it’s seasonal.
  • Bring a bike or a kayak if you’d like to explore the pathway or the river.
  • In winter, pair a walk through the village with dinner on Main Street.

Whether you come for a day or are thinking about staying for good, Manotick rewards a slow visit. Walk the streets, talk to shop owners and spend time by the river, and you’ll understand why so many people who visit end up moving here.

Manotick is close enough to Ottawa for an easy afternoon trip, but it has enough going on to fill a full day, especially in summer. Many visitors come back again and again as the seasons change, from the spring river and early market Saturdays to the fall colours along the Rideau and quiet winter evenings on Main Street. If you find yourself returning often, that’s usually a sign the village might suit you as a place to live, too.

Working with Jason has been an absolute privilege from start to finish. Finding the right realtor can be daunting, but Jason exceeded every expectation. He is remarkably knowledgeable and was extremely punctual and responsive to every question or request we had, no matter the time or the day. What stood out most was his complete sincerity and zero-pressure approach. When we walked through houses, he was transparent, pointing out both the pros and potential red flags instead of trying to make a quick sale. His honest feedback gave us complete confidence in our decision. If you want a dedicated, honest, and highly skilled agent in your corner, look no further than Jason!

Jason helped me buy my first home. He was extremely responsive and available from our very first call, and assisted with booking multiple viewings across Ottawa. He was punctual to every viewing and honest with his feedback with the homes we saw, and when it came time to go from viewing to buying, he had an impressive array of contacts from brokers to inspectors to lawyers, all with excellent reviews and who were great to work with in their own right. As a first-time home buyer, his responsiveness and patience with many questions were extremely reassuring and really streamlined the process, and I signed an offer on my home within just 2 weeks of meeting him. I would strongly recommend Jason to anyone buying a home in Ottawa, especially to those who are strangers to the process like I was. Thank you again, Jason!

Working with Jason on the sale of my property was genuinely one of the smoothest professional experiences I've had. He was responsive at every step, patient with every question (and I had many), and he clearly knew the local market inside and out. My sale wasn't a simple one — there was a tenant, a rental water heater, a plumber to coordinate, and plenty of complications that made this a genuinely difficult case. Jason handled all of it with calm, practical advice and always got back to me quickly, often with a solution before I even finished asking about the problem. What stood out most was his honesty. He didn't push, he didn't overpromise, and every recommendation he made turned out to be exactly right. I felt like I had a professional in my corner from day one. If you're looking for a realtor who is knowledgeable, responsive, and genuinely trustworthy, I can't recommend Jason highly enough. Thank you, Jason — much appreciated!

Outstanding Experience with Jason Polonski! Last May, my wife and I sold our home in Stittsville with Jason Polonski, and we couldn't be happier with our decision. Jason made the entire process remarkably smooth and stress-free. From day one, Jason stood out for his exceptional communication. He was always prompt and available to answer our queries—often within minutes—no matter the time of day. Whenever we had questions regarding paperwork, listing strategies, or handling property details, he addressed every concern with a truly genuine, human touch. What impressed us most was how proactive and reassuring he was at every step. When we had to coordinate the buyout of our water heater rental, Jason handled the reimbursement seamlessly, reassuring us with, "We should have a smooth sale now. :)"—and it truly was! Even post-closing, when we needed to arrange delivery for mailbox keys or track down final funds from head office, Jason stayed on top of every detail, putting a rush on things and constantly keeping us updated. Jason is a dedicated, attentive, and highly professional realtor who genuinely cares about his clients. It has been an absolute pleasure working with him, and we highly recommend Jason Polonski to anyone looking to buy or sell a home in the Ottawa region.

I highly recommend Jason Polonski, a realtor in Kanata, Ottawa. He truly went above and beyond for me. During a long weekend, he called me and, within just two hours, had an offer to purchase prepared and sent so I could secure the home I had found and fallen in love with. Jason was professional, efficient, knowledgeable, and incredibly pleasant to work with. His rates are very reasonable, and his dedication to his clients is outstanding. If you’re looking for fast, reliable, and friendly service, I would absolutely recommend contacting him.❤️
