The best things to do in Constance Bay are on the water and in the woods: sandy beaches on the Ottawa River, 147 hectares of forest trails in Torbolton Forest, some of the best birding in Ottawa, and a community centre that runs year-round. It’s a village of about 2,300 people on a peninsula roughly 25 kilometres northwest of Kanata, and life here moves at river speed.
This guide covers what residents actually do, season by season, and what to know if you’re thinking of moving here.
The beaches are the reason many people first visit Constance Bay. The village sits on a peninsula on the Ottawa River between two bays, Constance Bay and Buckham’s Bay, with sand underfoot along much of the shoreline.
The City’s Constance Bay secondary plan names four public spots that provide most of the community’s access to the water:
The village has 39 public road allowances that lead to the river, and the City treats them as heritage assets to keep, not sell. That means even owners of interior lots can usually walk to the water.
A safety note from local boaters: the river side of the Point has a steep drop-off, so keep young children and weak swimmers well back from that edge (Nepean Sailing Club). Water quality on the Ottawa River changes after heavy rain, and Ottawa Riverkeeper publishes monitoring results worth checking before a swim.
Constance Bay is a popular anchorage for boaters on Lac Deschênes, the wide section of the Ottawa River upstream of the city. On summer weekends, you’ll see powerboats, sailboats and paddleboards; weekdays are much quieter. Canada Day fireworks over the bay are a local tradition.
Kayakers and paddleboarders can explore Buckham’s Bay or follow the shoreline toward Dunrobin Shores. The Ottawa River Regulation Planning Board posts current river levels, which matters in spring when the water runs high and fast.
The village wraps around Torbolton Forest, a 147-hectare managed greenspace that Ontario has designated an Area of Natural and Scientific Interest. Its sandy trails wind through pine and oak and are used year-round for walking, running, mountain biking and snowshoeing.
Next to it are the Constance Bay Sand Hills, a protected landscape of old dunes. The secondary plan describes the Sand Hills as designated by the Province for long-term protection, so it’s not going to be developed. For homeowners, that’s a rare guarantee of green space nearby.
Constance Bay is a serious birding destination. Almost 250 species had been recorded on the peninsula by 2021. Red-headed woodpeckers have bred in Torbolton Forest since the early 2000s, the only known breeding location for the species in Ottawa.
Spring and fall migration bring waterfowl to the bay and songbirds to the forest edge. The Ottawa Field-Naturalists’ Club runs outings and keeps birders up to date on sightings across the region.
The community centre is the village’s hub. Run with the Constance and Buckham’s Bay Community Association, it has a free skateboard park, two lit baseball diamonds, full-size and mini soccer fields, a play structure, an outdoor ice rink and a volunteer-run concession stand.
The Constance Bay branch of the Ottawa Public Library is inside the community centre at 262 Len Purcell. It’s a handy spot for kids’ programs, holds and printing without driving to Kanata.
The village also has a Royal Canadian Legion branch (Branch 616), a chapel, and a general store with a small LCBO section, plus a café and a pizza spot along Constance Bay Road. Most weekly shopping happens in Kanata.
Winter is quieter but far from empty. The outdoor rink at the community centre is the centre of village life on cold weekends. Torbolton Forest’s trails are good for snowshoeing and winter walks, and cross-country skiers head to the trails at Fitzroy Provincial Park, which are maintained by the West Carleton Nordic Ski Club.
Ice on the Ottawa River is unpredictable because of the current. Stay off it unless you have reliable local knowledge of conditions that day.
Constance Bay is close to some of the best outings in West Carleton:
The people who thrive here want the river and the forest on their doorstep and don’t mind driving for groceries. Families like the community centre and the bussed school routes. Remote workers like the quiet. Retirees and downsizers like the beaches, the birding and the smaller lots that are easy to keep up.
It isn’t for everyone. If you want sidewalks to shops, transit and a five-minute grocery run, Kanata or Stittsville will suit you better. If you’re weighing the trade-offs, compare it with a nearby village in my Dunrobin vs Constance Bay guide, then read about commuting from Constance Bay.
Life in Constance Bay follows the river and the weather more than the calendar. Here’s what each season tends to look like for residents.
Spring. The river rises with the snowmelt, so spring is when residents watch water levels and forecasts closely. It’s also one of the best times of year for birding, as waterfowl move through the bay and songbirds return to Torbolton Forest. The trails dry out quickly on the sandy soil, so walking season starts early.
Summer. This is peak Constance Bay. The beaches and the Point fill up on warm weekends, boats anchor in the bay, and the ball diamonds and soccer fields at the community centre are busy most evenings. Weekdays are noticeably quieter, which residents treasure. Canada Day fireworks over the bay are a highlight.
Fall. The crowds thin out, the pines and oaks frame the river in autumn colour, and fall migration brings another wave of birds. It’s a favourite season for long walks in Torbolton Forest and paddles on calm mornings. The Carp Fair, a short drive away, is a West Carleton tradition.
Winter. The village slows down. The outdoor rink becomes the gathering place, the forest trails are good for snowshoeing, and cross-country skiers head to Fitzroy Provincial Park. Winters are quiet here, which is exactly what some residents want.
Families tend to build their week around a few local favourites:
Much of Constance Bay’s character comes from volunteers. The Constance and Buckham’s Bay Community Association looks after the community centre and its programs, and the concession stand at the fields is volunteer-run. The Royal Canadian Legion branch and the chapel are also part of village life. Joining in is one of the fastest ways for newcomers to feel at home.
If you’re coming for a day at the beach before deciding whether to live here, a few tips help. Arrive early on hot summer weekends, when the most popular spots fill up. Respect private property along the shoreline and use the public accesses. Pack out what you bring in, because the beaches are cared for by the community. And if you’re house hunting, stay for the evening. Constance Bay feels very different once the day visitors leave and the residents come out for a walk.
If you’d like to see the village through a resident’s eyes, I’m happy to plan a visit that pairs a few homes with a walk at the Point, a loop through Torbolton Forest and a stop at the community centre.

Working with Jason on the sale of my property was genuinely one of the smoothest professional experiences I've had. He was responsive at every step, patient with every question (and I had many), and he clearly knew the local market inside and out. My sale wasn't a simple one — there was a tenant, a rental water heater, a plumber to coordinate, and plenty of complications that made this a genuinely difficult case. Jason handled all of it with calm, practical advice and always got back to me quickly, often with a solution before I even finished asking about the problem. What stood out most was his honesty. He didn't push, he didn't overpromise, and every recommendation he made turned out to be exactly right. I felt like I had a professional in my corner from day one. If you're looking for a realtor who is knowledgeable, responsive, and genuinely trustworthy, I can't recommend Jason highly enough. Thank you, Jason — much appreciated!Posted on Google![]()

Outstanding Experience with Jason Polonski! Last May, my wife and I sold our home in Stittsville with Jason Polonski, and we couldn't be happier with our decision. Jason made the entire process remarkably smooth and stress-free. From day one, Jason stood out for his exceptional communication. He was always prompt and available to answer our queries—often within minutes—no matter the time of day. Whenever we had questions regarding paperwork, listing strategies, or handling property details, he addressed every concern with a truly genuine, human touch. What impressed us most was how proactive and reassuring he was at every step. When we had to coordinate the buyout of our water heater rental, Jason handled the reimbursement seamlessly, reassuring us with, "We should have a smooth sale now. :)"—and it truly was! Even post-closing, when we needed to arrange delivery for mailbox keys or track down final funds from head office, Jason stayed on top of every detail, putting a rush on things and constantly keeping us updated. Jason is a dedicated, attentive, and highly professional realtor who genuinely cares about his clients. It has been an absolute pleasure working with him, and we highly recommend Jason Polonski to anyone looking to buy or sell a home in the Ottawa region.Posted on Google![]()

Buying our first home was a huge milestone for us, and we genuinely couldn't have asked for a better person to guide us through it than Jason. From day one, he made the entire process feel so much less overwhelming. What could have been a stressful experience was instead exciting, enjoyable, and honestly a lot of fun. He has a great sense of humour and a way of keeping things light when needed, while still being incredibly thorough and professional. One of the things we appreciated most was how much he genuinely cared about finding us the right home. He wasn't just trying to help us buy a house, he wanted to make sure we were making a good decision. He took the time to point out things we never would have noticed ourselves, shared insights about the homes we viewed, and was always looking out for potential issues that could become headaches down the road. It was obvious that he wanted us to end up somewhere we'd be truly happy, not just somewhere that checked a box. He also listened. Every preference, every must-have, every little detail we mentioned along the way was remembered and taken into consideration. We never felt pressured, rushed, or like we were compromising on what mattered to us. On top of that, he was incredibly responsive and always on the ball. Whether it was answering a last-minute question, booking a showing, or helping us navigate the next step, he was always there when we needed him. We felt supported every step of the way, and that's not something we'll forget. If you're looking for a realtor who is knowledgeable, honest, hardworking, and genuinely invested in his clients, we can't recommend Jason enough. We are so grateful for everything he did to help us find our home.Posted on Google![]()

The river side of the Point drops off steeply, so keep children and weaker swimmers away from that edge and choose a gentler beach. Check water quality after heavy rain.
