Childcare costs in Ottawa for children under 6 are capped at $22 a day at licensed programs enrolled in the Canada-Wide Early Learning and Child Care system, and Ontario reports a provincial average of $19 a day. The catch is availability: families often join waitlists through the City’s Child Care Registry and Waitlist, and full-fee programs outside the system cost more.
This guide explains what you’ll pay, how to find a space, who qualifies for help and how child care can shape where you buy.
For a child under 6 at a licensed program enrolled in the Canada-Wide Early Learning and Child Care (CWELCC) system, Ontario says reduced fees were capped at $22 a day as of January 1, 2025, bringing the provincial average to $19 a day. The Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives’ August 2026 fee survey found that parents in Ontario’s large cities paid $22 a day for infant and preschool spaces in the program.
At $22 a day for about 21 days a month, that works out to roughly $460 a month per child before any subsidy.
Costs are higher if:
According to Ontario’s child care agreement page:
Ontario gives the example of an 18-month-old whose care fell from $62 to $22 a day, a saving of more than $10,400 over a full year.
| Ottawa (CWELCC cap) | Gatineau (Quebec subsidized rate) | |
|---|---|---|
| Per day | $22.00 | $9.65 |
| Per month (about 21 days) | About $460 | About $200 |
| Per year (about 252 days) | About $5,540 | About $2,430 |
These are estimates for one child in full-time care before any fee subsidy, based on Ontario’s cap and Quebec’s 2026 rate. Before Ontario joined the national program, some Ontario spaces cost more than $70 a day, The Canadian Press reported.
Not in the near term. In September 2026, Ontario and the federal government agreed to a four-year extension of the national program, with funding to at least 2031. Ontario committed to keep fees at a $22 cap and about $19 a day on average until June 30, 2027, and what happens after that is still under discussion, according to The Canadian Press. Ontario is one of three provinces with set fees above $10 a day.
Lower fees have driven demand far ahead of supply. As of September 2026, about 8,500 children were on Ottawa’s central child care waitlist, and the number of families looking for care had risen about 300% since 2019. The City says it meets roughly three-quarters of demand and needs about 7,400 more spaces, even after the province allocated about 2,900 new spaces to Ottawa between 2023 and 2026, The Canadian Press reported. Province-wide, Ontario had created just under 60,000 of the 86,000 affordable spaces it promised and now aims to reach the target by March 31, 2027.
What that means for families:
The City of Ottawa’s Child Care Registry and Waitlist is the main way to apply for licensed child care. You can:
Apply early. Many families register during pregnancy or as soon as they know their move date, and infant spaces are often the hardest to find. If you need help with the system, call 3-1-1.
The City offers a child care fee subsidy for families who need help with costs. Key points:
Ontario says parent contributions for subsidized children in CWELCC programs were cut by half under the agreement.
You can check any licensed program’s status and recent inspection reports with Ontario’s licensed child care search.
Once children start kindergarten, many families need care before and after the school day. Ontario’s school boards are required to make before- and after-school programs available for kindergarten to Grade 6, either running them directly or through third-party providers. At the OCDSB, these are part of its Extended Day Program.
Ask your designated school which provider runs its program, the daily fee and whether there’s a waitlist. Before- and after-school programs are also included in the City’s fee subsidy.
Eligible families can claim child care expenses as a deduction on their income tax return, according to the Canada Revenue Agency. Limits depend on the child’s age and other rules, so check the CRA’s details or ask your accountant. Ontario also continues to offer the Ontario Child Care Tax Credit for eligible families.
Across the river in Quebec, subsidized child care costs $9.65 a day in 2026. That’s about $12 a day less than Ottawa’s cap, or roughly $260 a month per child over 21 days of care.
For some families with young children, that gap is a reason to consider Gatineau. But Quebec’s higher income tax, French-language schooling rules and different health and auto insurance systems also matter. See our full comparison of Ottawa vs Gatineau.
Child care is a daily trip, often in both directions. When you’re choosing a home, think about:

Jason helped me buy my first home. He was extremely responsive and available from our very first call, and assisted with booking multiple viewings across Ottawa. He was punctual to every viewing and honest with his feedback with the homes we saw, and when it came time to go from viewing to buying, he had an impressive array of contacts from brokers to inspectors to lawyers, all with excellent reviews and who were great to work with in their own right. As a first-time home buyer, his responsiveness and patience with many questions were extremely reassuring and really streamlined the process, and I signed an offer on my home within just 2 weeks of meeting him. I would strongly recommend Jason to anyone buying a home in Ottawa, especially to those who are strangers to the process like I was. Thank you again, Jason!Posted on Google![]()

Working with Jason on the sale of my property was genuinely one of the smoothest professional experiences I've had. He was responsive at every step, patient with every question (and I had many), and he clearly knew the local market inside and out. My sale wasn't a simple one — there was a tenant, a rental water heater, a plumber to coordinate, and plenty of complications that made this a genuinely difficult case. Jason handled all of it with calm, practical advice and always got back to me quickly, often with a solution before I even finished asking about the problem. What stood out most was his honesty. He didn't push, he didn't overpromise, and every recommendation he made turned out to be exactly right. I felt like I had a professional in my corner from day one. If you're looking for a realtor who is knowledgeable, responsive, and genuinely trustworthy, I can't recommend Jason highly enough. Thank you, Jason — much appreciated!Posted on Google![]()

Outstanding Experience with Jason Polonski! Last May, my wife and I sold our home in Stittsville with Jason Polonski, and we couldn't be happier with our decision. Jason made the entire process remarkably smooth and stress-free. From day one, Jason stood out for his exceptional communication. He was always prompt and available to answer our queries—often within minutes—no matter the time of day. Whenever we had questions regarding paperwork, listing strategies, or handling property details, he addressed every concern with a truly genuine, human touch. What impressed us most was how proactive and reassuring he was at every step. When we had to coordinate the buyout of our water heater rental, Jason handled the reimbursement seamlessly, reassuring us with, "We should have a smooth sale now. :)"—and it truly was! Even post-closing, when we needed to arrange delivery for mailbox keys or track down final funds from head office, Jason stayed on top of every detail, putting a rush on things and constantly keeping us updated. Jason is a dedicated, attentive, and highly professional realtor who genuinely cares about his clients. It has been an absolute pleasure working with him, and we highly recommend Jason Polonski to anyone looking to buy or sell a home in the Ottawa region.Posted on Google![]()

Buying our first home was a huge milestone for us, and we genuinely couldn't have asked for a better person to guide us through it than Jason. From day one, he made the entire process feel so much less overwhelming. What could have been a stressful experience was instead exciting, enjoyable, and honestly a lot of fun. He has a great sense of humour and a way of keeping things light when needed, while still being incredibly thorough and professional. One of the things we appreciated most was how much he genuinely cared about finding us the right home. He wasn't just trying to help us buy a house, he wanted to make sure we were making a good decision. He took the time to point out things we never would have noticed ourselves, shared insights about the homes we viewed, and was always looking out for potential issues that could become headaches down the road. It was obvious that he wanted us to end up somewhere we'd be truly happy, not just somewhere that checked a box. He also listened. Every preference, every must-have, every little detail we mentioned along the way was remembered and taken into consideration. We never felt pressured, rushed, or like we were compromising on what mattered to us. On top of that, he was incredibly responsive and always on the ball. Whether it was answering a last-minute question, booking a showing, or helping us navigate the next step, he was always there when we needed him. We felt supported every step of the way, and that's not something we'll forget. If you're looking for a realtor who is knowledgeable, honest, hardworking, and genuinely invested in his clients, we can't recommend Jason enough. We are so grateful for everything he did to help us find our home.
